The federal government's $1.2 billion for the purchase of Viagra and Cialis is set to be paid for by consumers who purchase the two popular medications.
The Federal Drug Administration on Monday announced it will start selling the four drugs, including the popular erectile dysfunction drug, for the federal government to buy.
"As of today, the FDA is advising consumers to refrain from purchasing Viagra or Cialis through its website, which is owned by Pfizer Canada Inc. and is operated by its wholly owned subsidiary," the agency said in a press release.
The Food and Drug Administration also said the agency will make final decisions on the sale of the products.
The FDA said it will recommend that consumers pay an $800 fee to be paid by the drug companies.
FDA chief medical officer Dr. Elizabeth Kavaler said the agency's approval of the Viagra and Cialis products is the first step in the effort to secure a market share of the drugs.
The Food and Drug Administration said the sale of Viagra and Cialis will continue to support the overall health and well-being of Americans.
"We are pleased to announce that we are taking an important step toward making important, affordable healthcare available to all," said Janet Woodcock, director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
She added: "The FDA is reviewing the results of a large, two-year study of Viagra and Cialis which looked at long-term effects of the drug, and will be taking the agency's recommendations accordingly."
Cialis and Viagra are the only two drugs on the market that are FDA-approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
The two medications are the same drug, but Cialis was approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998, and Viagra was approved for the treatment of the male sexual disorder in 2003.
